Mamma Mia! Hither We Get Once again is a 2018 jukebox musical romantic comedy picture written and directed past Ol Parker, from a story by Parker, Catherine Johnson, and Richard Curtis. It is a follow-upwards to the 2008 film Mamma Mia!, which in turn is based on the musical of the aforementioned proper name using the music of ABBA. Due to the financial success of the first film, Universal Pictures had long been interested in a sequel. The film was officially announced in May 2017, with Parker hired to write and direct. In June 2017, many of the original bandage confirmed their involvement, with James being cast in the part of Young Donna that July. Filming took place from August to Dec 2017 in Croatia (near prominently Vis), Bordeaux, Stockholm, Oxford, Hampton and at Shepperton Studios. A British and American articulation venture, the film was co-produced by Playtone, Littlestar Productions and Legendary Entertainment.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Over again was premiered at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on July 16, 2018, and was released in the United Kingdom and the United states of america on July 20, 2018, ten years to the week afterward its predecessor's release, in both standard and IMAX formats.[v] The film was a box office success, grossing $402 million worldwide and received generally positive reviews, as an improvement over its predecessor with critics praising the performances and musical numbers.[half-dozen] [7]

Plot [edit]

In a flashback to 1979, a young Donna Sheridan graduates from Oxford's New College with Rosie and Tanya ("When I Kissed the Instructor"), and dreams of a Greek island named Kalokairi. Donna'southward mother, Ruby, is a famous vocalizer; but she has a strained relationship with her daughter and is consistently away on bout, and does non attend the graduation. Fed up with her female parent's constant negligence and adamant to spend her life making memories, Donna decided to travel to Kalokairi to find her destiny.

In the nowadays, five years after the events of the first film, Sophie is in Kalokairi preparing for the thou reopening of the Hotel Bella Donna, in honour of her recently deceased mother. She misses her boat to Kalokairi just is offered a ride past Bill Anderson in his yacht, and the two dance and flirt ("Why Did Information technology Take To Be Me"). On the way, they help a stranded fisherman, Alexio, back to shore in time to salvage the love of his life from having to marry some other. In the present, Rosie and Tanya make it to support Sophie, and she shows them the new hotel ("I Have a Dream"). A heavy storm and then breaks out and Donna discovers a trapped horse and soothes it with the help of Sam Carmichael. Sam, who has been living in a cabin on the island, reassures Sophie that she tin never permit her female parent down, telling her the story of how he one time let Donna down. Years agone, before Sophie was built-in, Donna and Sam were enjoying a whirlwind romance ("The Proper noun of the Game"), but it ended badly when Donna found out Sam was engaged to another woman, Lorraine. Heartbroken, Donna breaks upwards with him and tearfully watches him leave the isle ("Knowing Me Knowing You"), while the present Sam reassures Sophie of her mother'south value for her.

Following Sam's difference, Donna is visited by Tanya and Rosie, who cheer her up past singing with her as Donna and the Dynamos ("Mamma Mia"). Bill returns to the island, and Donna joins him on his boat, much to the chagrin of Rosie who falls for Bill. While they are gone, Sam returns, having ended his appointment for Donna, but is saddened to hear that she is with another man. Donna discovers she is pregnant but has no idea which i of her iii recent lovers is the father. Beak'south great-aunt Sofia overhears Donna's wish to stay on the island and reveals she owns the abandoned farmhouse Donna has been staying in. Donna happily accepts her offer to stay in that location, where she eventually gives birth to Sophie.

In the present, Sophie opens upward to Rosie and Tanya almost her conflict with Heaven and Rosie explains to Sophie how she and Bill bankrupt up ("Angel Eyes"). Meanwhile, Bill, Harry, and Sky leave their ventures abroad to support Sophie simply are told there are no boats to Kalokairi. However, a much older Alexio recognises Bill and offers the trio safe gunkhole passage to the isle every bit gratitude for saving his relationship. Bill convinces the others to join them for a party on Kalokairi. Ix months afterwards, Sophie has given birth to a babe male child, named Donny. At the christening, Donna'due south spirit proudly watches over her daughter as the two of them have ane final moment before Donna fully passes on ("My Dearest, My Life"). Mamma Mia! Here Nosotros Go Again was announced on May xix, 2017, with a release date of July twenty, 2018.[x] It was written and directed by Ol Parker.[11] On September 27, 2017, Benny Andersson confirmed 3 ABBA songs that would be featured in the film: "When I Kissed the Teacher," "I Wonder (Departure)," and "Angeleyes."[12] "I Wonder (Departure)" was cutting from the picture show, but is included on the soundtrack album.

Casting [edit]

Marketing [edit]

The commencement trailer for the film was released on December 21, 2017, in front of Pitch Perfect iii, some other Universal Pictures film. Cher performed "Fernando" at the Las Vegas CinemaCon on April 25, 2018, after footage of the movie was shown.[29] Universal sponsored YouTube stars the Merrell Twins to perform a cover version of the song "Mamma Mia" to promote the film.[30]

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian termed the sequel as "weirdly irresistible" and gave it three out of five stars. He described his reaction to the start film as "a combination of hives and bubonic plague," but concedes that this fourth dimension, the relentlessness and greater self-aware one-act made him smile. He concludes: "More than enjoyable than I thought. But please. Peter Travers of Rolling Rock awarded the film two and a half stars out of five, noting the absenteeism of Streep for the majority of the film hindered his enjoyment, and saying, "her absence is deeply felt since the three-time Oscar winner sang and danced her eye out as Donna Sheridan".[50] Lindsay Bahr of Associated Press awarded the film 3 out of four stars, calling it "wholly ridiculous", just complimenting its self-awareness. She also praised James' operation and singing talent.[51] Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sunday-Times gave the sequel a mixed review, awarding it 2 stars out of four, criticizing the reprises of "Dancing Queen" and "Super Trouper" equally uninspired, and feeling that some of the musical numbers dragged the pacing. He considered the younger counterparts to the main characters "energetic" and "likeable."[52] Stephanie Zacharek of Fourth dimension gave the film a mixed review, writing "Mamma Mia! Here We Get Once more is awful. And wonderful. Information technology's all the reasons y'all should never get to the movies. And all the reasons you should race to get a ticket."[53]

Sequel [edit]

In June 2020, Judy Craymer announced that a third moving-picture show is in development, with the producer confirming that some of the new ABBA songs written for the band's reunion could characteristic in the soundtrack, although stating that the COVID-19 pandemic has acquired delays with development of the project.[54]
